Follow Dutch triathletes in IRONMAN South Africa |
|
zaterdag 24 april 2010 |
Just a short message for everyone that wants to follow the race tomorrow. You can track any athletes at www.ironman.com. They will cover the whole race during the day. You'll be following the top pro-triathletes through the leaderboard (hopefully I'm getting on there at some point . I'm gonna try really hard! Rick has arrived on Thursday so I'm a very happy person. These past days have been really good on us and now all we have to do is race tomorrow, get Rick a nice suntan and see three more of the big five! I'll try to put a story on my page as soon as I can after the race. Cheer for all our Duthc athletes here (there's a lot of us!) and off course all the others! |

To fly or not to fly to PE? |
|
dinsdag 20 april 2010 |
Who would have guessed that a volcano burst in Iceland can cause that much trouble! Ricks flight was cancelled on Sunday as well as many other flights which should have contained athletes from Europe who were to race in PE coming weekend. Dirk Wijnalda’s flight is cancelled. I don’t know about Jerzy Kasemiers arrival. Gerrit Schellens of Belgium already called off for the race and also Mathias Hecht from Austria probably won’t be able to make it. It’s an act of nature and nobody can anything about this. Hopefully a lot of athletes are still able to get on a flight, although the preparation as according to tapering is far from optimal at this point. I keep my fingers crossed…

PE: friendly city or sporty city? |
|
maandag 12 april 2010 |
My third week in PE is coming up. Seven nights till Ricks arrival. Yes, I’m counting the days. Not only because I miss him, but also because I want to share my experience here. Port Elizabeth is not a touristic city, but I can imagine people really want to live here. The city, more commonly known as PE, has got beautiful surroundings and within riding distance you are in gorgeous natureplaces. You can go camping, hiking along nice trails and enjoy the country and its animals. But most of all PE is a sportive city. |

Just another day for you and me in paradise |

Just another day for you and me in paradise. Phill Collins sang this to remind us how lucky we are. Just think about it, he sings in this song. And yes, I do think about it. Riding my full carbon bike, running on my brand new Saucony’s in dry fit clothes and swimming in a pool with music under water. I feel rich, lucky and blessed to be able to see and enjoy this beautiful country like I do now. Especially in a country where the gap between poor and rich is big, but where the people you meet are so nice and friendly. Port Elizabeth is also known as the friendly city (as well as the windy city, which suits this place also very well!) and I can assure you that this is completely true!

Just a week ago I got on a plane to South Africa. Port Elizabeth, to be specific. What had been planned more than half a year ago, finally was there. I was going to the other side of the world to train and finally race in the IRONMAN of South Africa. The flight was pleasant and smooth, although KLM did make me pay a double tariff on my bikecase which was only 3 kilo’s too heavy. That was a bummer, but once we hit the air and the nice stewards took good care of us I kind of forgot about it.
